Design Exchange Announces EMERGING DESIGNER COMPETITION Supported by RBC Foundation

On March 26th, 2013 @DesignExchange tweeted “ANNOUNCING CA’s 1st national multidisciplinary design competition for EMERGING DESIGNERS”. Designer Exchange (DX) proudly partnered up with Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) Foundation for this competition with the mission to help up-and-coming Canadian designers achieve recognition and exposure as well as to showcase their divergent talent.

President of the DX, Shauna Levy has a knack for connecting emerging talent with design expertise and explains “This competition occupies a special place for the DX, as it provides a platform for design in general, and the next Canadian design star, in particular, to be celebrated in the same way that other creative disciplines are – be it art or writing. It is time for us as a society to take design seriously, from both commercial and cultural perspectives. We are proud to partner with the RBC Foundation to support Canadian ingenuity, by linking the up-and-comers with celebrated mentors.”

There will be a two-stage judging process for this competition. The first stage will be with a panel of five judges which include: womenswear designer and Creative Director of luxury label VAWK, Sunny Fong; celebrated designer, former co-founding Principal of 3rd Uncle Design Inc., and Founder of+tongtong, John Tong; co-founder and Creative Chief of multidisciplinary agency, Sid Lee, Philippe Meunier; Creative Director of unconventional design house Bocci and founder of Omer Arbel Architects, Omer Arbel; and lastly, multi-talented industrial designer, and international development visionary, Patty Johnson. These five Canadian innovative and business masterminds will select up to 25 semi-finalists. The second stage of judging for this competition includes a panel of 3 global luminaries; Vancouver-based Douglas Coupland, Dutch product and interior designer Marcel Wanders and Chair and CEO of Indigo Books & Music Inc. Heather Reisman.

Different design fields are welcome in this competition including: Fashion, Graphic, Industrial, Product, Digital and Interactive. All Canadian designers must have a maximum of five years experience in their respective industries and are asked to submit a digital copy of their portfolio, a copy of their CV, two reference letters, and a short video outlining what this opportunity means for them professionally. All entries must be received by 5:00pm on Wednesday September 30th, 2013 (Late entries will not be accepted). The winner of this competition will receive a monetary prize of $10,000 and will get the exclusive opportunity to exhibit their word at Design Exchange in January 2014. But the excitement doesn’t stop there – not only will the winner receive this incredible promotion and publicity through Design Exchange, they will also receive an online feature with AZURE Magazine; which was founded in 1985 by Nelda Rodger and Sergio Sgaramella, it is a Canadian magazine covering architecture and design, published in Toronto, Ontario.
