September 16 2009 to September 20 2009

The inspiring non-profit grassroots organization, Manifesto, returns with their 3rd annual, critically acclaimed Manifesto Festival of Community & Culture.  From September 16 2009 to September 20 2009, Toronto will play host to countless performances from some our city’s best, art exhibits, a film festival, workshops, and most importantly, a showcase to the world of our city’s “collective sense of pride and possibility.”  Together, with international legends (Talib Kweli, Hi-Tek, 9th Wonder etc.) and home grown talents (SKAM, Agile, Tona, Solitair etc.), this festival plays a pivotal role in showcasing Toronto’s achievements in the arts and in the music industry.  But more importantly, it gives the world an opportunity to learn about our culture, and for the world to understand what our communities stand for.  Focusing on Toronto’s urban culture, Manifesto aims to educate the masses on what this culture embodies, and what it represents to our generation as a whole.

We start our coverage of Manifesto Festival of Community & Culture 2009 with the full 5 day itinerary.  Subsequently, we will follow up with the various events and performances that make up this unique and truly Toronto festival…in true FRESHLY.EDUCATED.MEN style of course!

Toronto, let’s show the world what we’re all made of and more…

My Toronto

A picture says 1000 words.  In this age of hustle and bustle, we tend to forget that our city has amazing visuals that tell our story.  We may pass by an intersection, a road, a building, a person, a shop many times without appreciating its beauty.  Every week we want to give you a unique perspective from a local Toronto photographer through their eyes.

What they capture may tell an untold story.

MORE Roc-A-Fella

September 19 2009 @ Woo Lounge

Founded in 1996 by Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, Damon Dash and Kareem “Biggs” Burke, its humble beginnings as an independent record label for Jay-Z’s debut album Reasonable Doubt, after being turned down by several major labels, is the stuff made out of legends.  From its low-rent office on John Street in New York, to now (flash forward over a decade) the larger than life symbol of New York’s hip hop culture, Roc-A-Fella Records has firmly established itself as one of the greatest innovators of hip hop.  Churning out artists such as Kanye West, Cam’ron, Freeway and Beanie Sigel (among many), Roc-A-Fella has redefined a generation of hip hop enthusiasts.  To honour 13 years (to date) of moving a whole generation with entertainment, MORE is set to pay tribute to this legendary record label in the form of…MORE Roc-A-Fella.  As always, with MORE’s pristine track record of unleashing real, no-holds-barred music at their events, Saturday night will surely make the whole Roc-A-Fella family proud…

ReFresh for Less
ReFresh for Less

September 13 2009 @ Rolly’s Garage – FREE Admission

“TeamSoFierce and The Associated Fresh, in partnership with Manifesto’s One City Series present:

*reFresh For Less*

Being fresh for less is always smart – especially during a recession. Most of our closets could use some editing anyway, so its a perfect time to bring your once loved clothes or shoes to a community of like minded people to buy, sell or swap.

$40 registration fee for vendors – space is limited, so don’t sleep! hit up refreshforless@gmail.com for more info”

Another unique event set to be unleashed September 13 2009 where fashionista’s and fashionisto’s alike have the opportunity to trade/sell their pieces…or even revamp their wardrobe.  This is the perfect time to finally lay your hands on those A.P.C jeans that you couldn’t get, or perhaps a velvet bow tie is more your treasure?  Whatever your fancy, this is sure to be fascinating to see what others have hidden in their closets. Think Kensington Market mixed in with eBay…but without the worries, shipping and fees. With this venture already sounding to be a success, we predict there to be a part 2 sometime in the near future.

LG Fashion Week

Runway

wear love : spring 2010 collections october 19-24 2009

Twice a year, Toronto hosts its internationally acclaimed fashion week.  Presented by LG & L’Oréal Paris, hosted by the Fashion Design Council of Canada (celebrating its 11th year), the city is engulfed with everything fashion, galas and most importantly, the fashionista’s and fashionisto’s of Toronto come out to celebrate our designers.  But, along with all the celebrations, there’s one crucial factor that comes to play during Fashion Week.  It is a platform for home grown designers to show their work on an international stage, while buyers and editors from all over the world are observing.  The week itself is a catalyst for their collections to be picked up by major retailers, while our city is being recognized for its creativity by a global audience.

So, on October 19 2009, once again, Toronto presents its creative innovation and our city’s unique chicness to the world.  This season marks a new beginning for Toronto Fashion Week as it moves to a new location located in the über-cool neighbourhood of King West.  With a month left until the lights shine upon our home grown designers and our city’s fashion know-how, we have the current run-down on Fashion Week, its schedule, designers and more on the new home of Toronto Fashion Week.
